for everyone

Lately I’ve been contemplating this idea of the standard of living.  This generation seems to feed off of living in the ambiguity of mediocrity, of aiming for the expectation level, of drawing satisfaction from just getting by... It seems like we’ve stopped dreaming and have settled for much too short of the fairytale... maybe ending up with the coachman instead of the prince (I’m not advocating that the coachman never get a girl, okay...)  But we’ve trained ourselves to think this way so never get hurt or run the risk of being...ouch...disappointed...

Anyway, this is not exclusive to meeting our ’S.O.’ (significant other).  We’ve been conditioned with this capped expectation level in our careers, lifestyles, even friendships...

To an extent, it seems like this generation has been starved of hope and possibility to the point that it’s stopped trying…like that picture of the elephant held in captivity that’s leg is tied up...eventually without even having a rope on his leg, he will still stay in that same place because his mind has been conditioned to think that he is limited.

Well I think there’s a solution...  In the Message Bible, it says "Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God....Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you."  (Romans 12:2).   The world says your dreams are a waste of time, but I believe that not only does God want us to rise to a new expectation level, but promises that He’ll give us the stamina to get there (and heighten our maturity along the way).

So I’ve been challenged, and extend this same challenge to you (haha...to all of you, my readers!), to DREAM BIG…to not settle for the hills and valleys of life only to return to the same, worn-out spot, but to up your faith to a higher point and believe that with a little work, a lot of heart, and God, anything is possible.

What's the standard of living that I'm believing for?  To change the stinkin’ world of course!

Malia!
I'm almost laughing because this is the very same thing God has been showing me these past several weeks or so! I just started reading "The Journey of Desire" by John Eldredge and it has a lot to do with what you wrote about. If you haven't read it, I recommend it. :D Here is a quote that really left an impression on me from C.S. Lewis from the book. He is referring to desire in this passage.

"I am almost committing an indecency. I am trying to rip open the inconsolable secret in each one of you -- the secret which hurts so much that you take your revenge on it by calling it names like Nostalgia and Romanticism and Adolescence."

It's so true isn't it? That's really what we do. It's scary when we recognize the dreams and desires God put in our heart...you know the kind that are unattainable by natural means and only can be achieved through absolute surrender to God. It would be so much easier to live at average -- at good enough. That way, if things don't go as planned the fall won't be as painful. However, God has shown me that He doesn't want me to live there, but under an open heaven. That's what He wants for us, but it takes true surrender of our hearts in His hands. Anyway, when we meet up, maybe we can talk about this a little more. Great blog! :D

ey malia, i remember one conversation i've had w/ one of my friends is SWM. We are convinced that we're the standard bearers. Our life must speak of something that people will really be impacted

Great post, Malia. I'm at the same place your are...being challenged to dream big for God and not to let my "smallness" define God. God's bigness should define my ideas, address my fears, and bring me to the edge of faith. Le'ts not settle, let's go for it!!

yes, i definitely agree with you... as God continues to entrust me with more leadership, the principle of living 'above reproach' has always stuck... i realize that i constantly make mistakes, but upholding a standard cannot be just a goal, i think it has to be a responsibility...

Hey Pastor Mike! I'm definitely excited to see how God will use you in Kapolei! I loved visiting a couple of weeks ago... It really feels like family and home... I know Julie enjoyed it too. Hopefully she'll be back.

Seeing the growth that's already happened out there is definitely evidence that we serve a powerful God with powerful plans for our lives... Hope to see you soon!
